Server to Desktop – First power up

After a ton of thinking I decided to use the stock PSU along with the PSU I wanted to use. The stock PSU is just to power the motherboard section and the ATX PSU is powering the drives and GPU. I bought one of those adapters that will turn on the secondary PSU when the first one turns on.

I powered it up and I’m only getting the built-in VGA output. When it’s testing the RAM it shut off. I felt around the motherboard and the North Bridge was on fire. The thermal camera said it was 70*C (158*F). It has had heatsink bit it’s like 8mm tall. I yanked it out and tossed in a 40x40x20 heatsink and tossed on a fan. The temp dropped to half and it fully booted into OpenSUSE.

So since it is mostly working I bought a Y adapter for the power and ordered a 40x40x40 heatsink. Gonna go taller on the north bridge and put the shorter one on the other chipset.

I want to get some 4pin 40mm fans but 3pin works just as fine. I found two matching 3pin 40mm fans in my stash that will work fine.

Don’t know why the GPU didn’t output. Might be something in the BIOS/UEFI I need to set or OpenSUSE doesn’t have the nVidia driver installed since I was using a Radeon GPU for the old test.

I need to modify the bottom portion of the case to house the stock PSU. I’ll wait on that until the rest of the stuff shows up.

A before and after thermals.
