Criminals Using Tech

So in New Jersey a burglar used a WiFi blocker to attempt to break into a home. This isn’t the first I have heard about this and has happened in other places. These blockers don’t just block WiFi but cellular as well.

My advise to the security conscious crowd or anyone for that matter. Hardwire your security equipment.

Don’t trust WiFi for your Camera system or Alarm system. For the Camera system use Digital IP Cameras. They use the standard typical Ethernet CAT5e or CAT6 cable. For alarm systems it’s kinda hard to get away from wireless contacts if your home doesn’t have wired sensors but when the system is armed and a sensor drops off it will send a tamper to central station and they will call the key holder / home owner of the account. Now make sure the alarm system has a dual path communicator that uses Ethernet.

Further more don’t use a cellular based internet connection. Because if the modem can’t connect then the ethernet for say the alarm system can not call out for help. It wouldn’t hurt to use a battery backup on the modem as well. So this way if the criminal/s cut the power and use a WiFi blockers the modem will still be up.

In the video they said a landline phone. There isn’t landlines (lanline) anymore. It’s all VoIP (Voice over IP) and there is no point to have one really. Reason being most modern homes do not have phone jacks and most people end up getting a cordless phone. However if your home has a phone jack or a ethernet drop you’re not planning to use for ethernet you can add a wired phone. If you’re internet service doesn’t offer VoIP then you can sign up to some VoIP service like Ooma.
