How far can I go with my ISP

So at the new house our Internet is through the HOA. The contractor is Fiber Fast and it’s alright for normal people to use day by day but it lacks some stuff.

How the setup works is they have a Calix ONT. Some people have Ubiquiti UF-loco and I have also seen Cisco floating around. The home builder I work with deals with Fiber Fast so I know my way around. Anyway, from the ONT it goes to a Plume Home Pass.

They neutered the Plume and locked out a bunch of options. Can’t turn off PNP (Plug-N-Play). Can’t set static IP addressing and no IPv6. Since the SMC is only so big I can’t stuff a PC inside to run pfSense so I decided to get a Mikrotik Routerboard hEX PoE. I know it will work coming off the ONT. I’ve seen customers ditch the Plume and toss in a Erro and ran into one IT guy that put in a Dream Machine.

However it got me thinking about this small two bit ISP. How far can I go? Can I drop the ONT and just plug the fiber straight into the router? After all the router has a SFP port. So I got a compatible SFP fiber module for the router for 20 bucks. Problem is it won’t be in until Sunday. So some time this week I’ll program the router and get it configured and Monday before the kids come home I’ll slap in the SFP module and see if it works.

A co-worker and friend mentioned the ONT might be tide to a MAC Address so I’ll clone the MAC address.

If this works I’ll buy a couple of EnGenius Fit APs. Might as well get the management controller to go with it. Reason why I am going to EnGenius is because I gave up on Ubiquiti and Araknis has been acting weird at some job sites. A few people I know rave about EnGenius so I’ll try it out.

What am I saying, ONT or not I’ll probably still buy the EnGenius equipment.
