WiFi woes

Been getting service calls about WiFi issues. Dunno why I get these because we’re not an ISP. Yet since we install equipment that uses the customer’s WiFi we get the blame.

For an example a work order would say “My hard line connections are faster then the WiFi”. Reason being is WiFi is different then Ethernet. Yes it uses TCP/IP but they’re different. WiFi is never gonna be as fast as Ethernet either. Not just networking but everything is better and faster with a hardline connection VS wireless.

Anyway, we typically add two or three devices that uses the WiFi. Such as the IQ4 Alarm Panel, ADC-VDB770 doorbell and a wireless camera of some sort. Problem is the customer already has 20 to 40 devices already on their network such as an Oven, Vacuum, TVs, Music players, Phones, Laptops and so on. Had one customer that lives alone and she has 41 wireless devices and 4 ethernet devices. Most of the devices are Google and Amazon devices. Those alone are always polling a ton of bandwidth. Connected via Ethernet are two TVs, work computer and a WiFi access point.

This is why in the past I have recommended people to get their homes wired for Ethernet and setup a proper network with vLANs and such. When you have something like Ubiquiti AC Pro access point just broadcasting a single network and have everything connected to it things will be slow and honestly a waste since you can setup vLANs on it and multiple networks. Have all of your IoT devices on one network and have your phones and computers on another.
